This is one of the first in my recent series of abstracts, and since it's such a departure from the rest of my work, I feel obligated to share some of my thoughts about what I'm up to.
For a while now I've been wrestling with the need to find some continuity in the art that I create, some shared characteristic, a concept that can tie everything together in some way. I've always been fascinated by dreams, the subconscious mind, and their influence upon what we do. My intent with this abstract series is to let paint be an outlet for the subconscious by allowing intuition to guide my hand - a direct mind-hand-canvas relationship without any representational imagery to slow me down.
I'd like to think that these images could be interpreted like dreams, with every mark and color telling a story. But I won't get into analysis here - I'll let the viewers make up their own minds...
I know the title is strange, but just how do you go about naming an abstract work? I think it's boring to name things "untitled" or "abstract #x", and I try to avoid doing so whenever I can. I suppose I could name them something arbitrary like "hammer" or "frustration", but descriptive titles are often charged with symbolic meaning that influences viewers in ways that I'd like to avoid. So I've chosen to string together words to form titles which, on their own, mean very little at all, and exist only to distinguish one work from another.
I like this...it seems vaguely organized and yet loose, balanced but free. I also find the naming of art to be a bit problematic..."untitled" seems like taking the easy way out and sometimes thinking up a name after spending all that time creating something seems like too much of a job...recently, I started writing down bits of conversations I hear during the day and then some of the snippets become titles to paintings.
I really like this. The lines and colors seem to flow, and it's a very peaceful but extravagant piece.
When it comes to titles, I have a totally different view. I think sometimes it's better to leave works "untitled" or "painting no.x". After all the feeling and energy put into a creation, it seems a bit of a waste to just throw some name on top of it. Unless the title was a perfect fit that came naturally, I prefer not to title my works.
